Civil War and Indian Wars soldier from Jacksonville, Ill. During the Civil War, English served as lieutenant of the 101st Illinois Infantry, Company E. In 1867, he was Jacksonville city attorney, but by 1871 he was back in the Army, serving as a lieutenant with the 7th U.S. Infantry in the western U.S. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Big Hole on August 9, 1877. The Seventh U.S. Infantry was organized under the act of Congress approved July 16, 1798, with William Bentley as Lieutenant Colonel Commandant. After an existence of less than two years, the regiment was honorably mustered out of the service on June 15, 1800. The regiment was again organized on May 3, 1808, with William Russell as colonel.
